Ernest John Obiena cleared 5.70 meters to win the 12th Asian Indoor Athletics Championships on Saturday at the Tuanbo Sports Centre Athletic Arena in Tianjin, China on Saturday.
The 30-year-old Obiena only needed one attempt to clinch the gold medal over the likes of 2023 Asian Games silver medalist and home bet Huang Bokai, bronze medalist Hussain Asim Al Hizam of Saudi Arabia and Southeast Asian Games silver medalist Patsapong Amsam-Ang of Thailand.
Obiena’s next stop will be the INIT Indoor Meeting Karlsruhe on Sunday where he will face the likes of Piotr Lisek of the Netherlands and home bet Bo Kanda Lita Baehre.
The two-time Olympian is aiming to clear at least 5.90m to earn a spot in the World Athletics Indoor Championships in Poland from 20 to 22 March.
