LA TRINIDAD, Benguet — As February ushers in the love month, couples and adventure seekers alike are looking for destinations that can warm both the body and the spirit — and Benguet has plenty to offer.

Blessed with cool weather, scenic landscapes, and pristine mountain ranges, the province is home to some of the country’s most popular hiking destinations, including Mount Pulag, Mount Purgatory, Mount Yangbew, and several others. Another destination drawing interest from seasoned hikers is Mount Oten.

Mount Oten is located in Kibungan and stands at an elevation of 1,891 meters above sea level. The mountain derives its name from the oten trees that grow abundantly in the area — tall wild berry shrubs native to the locality.

Its primary hiking route is a 17.4-kilometer out-and-back trail with a total elevation gain of approximately 1,656 meters. The trek typically begins at the Kibungan jump-off point along the Acop–Kapangan–Kibungan–Bakun Road.

From the summit, hikers are rewarded with sweeping views of the Cordillera mountain range. While the trail is open year-round, trekkers should expect overgrown grass, limited shade, and challenging terrain. Because of its length and physical demands, Mount Oten is best suited for experienced hikers with strong endurance.

For adventurous couples and outdoor enthusiasts seeking a meaningful and memorable experience this Valentine season, Mount Oten offers both challenge and breathtaking natural beauty.
