Department of Transportation (DOTr) Secretary Giovanni Lopez and Philippine Ports Authority (PPA) General Manager Jay Santiago inspected the development of the Amandeyahan Port in Basey, Samar, on 2 February.
The port is set for expansion and modernization, a move officials said is expected to support economic activity and improve the flow of goods in the region.
“It is important that we finish this port quickly because when the San Juanico Bridge was undergoing repairs, about 800 trucks were docking here every day,” Lopez said.
“That is why this port will play a big role, especially for businesses,” he added.
The transportation chief also underscored the importance of Amandeyahan Port as an alternative docking facility after the government imposed load restrictions on the San Juanico Bridge in Tacloban, Leyte, last year.
Lopez and Santiago directed PPA Eastern Visayas to complete the port’s expansion by June to help ease congestion and speed up cargo movement among ports in the region.
