Cignal’s long reign in Philippine men’s volleyball has come to an end after it filed a leave of absence from the Spikers’ Turf.
The nine-time champion announced the decision Friday, calling it the result of a review of its current and future plans.
“This difficult decision was made after a careful review by management of Cignal’s current and future plans,” Cignal said in a statement.
“We are deeply grateful to our coaches, players and staff, and to Awesome Nation for their unwavering support.”
Cignal debuted in the defunct Philippine Superliga in 2014 before transferring to the Spikers’ Turf the following year.
The Manny Pangilinan-owned club has been a long-time supporter of men’s volleyball, serving as a major backer of the Alas Pilipinas men’s national team, which competed in the FIVB Men’s World Championship and won bronze in the 33rd Southeast Asian Games in Thailand.
The Super Spikers, however, failed to reach the Spikers’ Turf finals for the first time since 2019, settling for bronze in the Invitational Conference last November after eight straight finals appearances.
With the leave of absence, members of the Super Spikers are now free agents.
