Beyond the spotlight: John Prats finds fulfillment

Jefferson Fernando

For years, John Prats thrived under the glare of television lights, growing up in front of audiences who watched him evolve from child star to leading man. Today, however, he is choosing a different kind of spotlight — one that no longer centers on himself.

Prats recently opened up about why returning to acting is no longer on his radar, despite frequent questions from fans and colleagues.

“May nagtatanong nga lagi sa akin kung hindi na ba ako mag-aartista, kung ayoko na ba umarte,” he shared, acknowledging the curiosity surrounding his absence from the screen.

(“People often ask me if I’m no longer going to be an actor, if I don’t want to act anymore.”)

The conversation, he revealed, even came up casually during a recent bus ride with longtime collaborator Coco Martin.

“In a U-bus conversation I had with Coco a few weeks ago, tinanong niya kung gusto ko bang bumalik,” Prats recalled.

(“During a U-bus conversation I had with Coco a few weeks ago, he asked if I wanted to return.”)

His answer was immediate and heartfelt.

“Sabi ko, happy ako kung nasaan ako ngayon,” he said. “Ang saya-saya ng puso ko sa purpose na meron ako ngayon.”

(“I told him I’m happy where I am now. My heart is so full because of the purpose I have now.”)

That sense of purpose, Prats explained, comes from work that no longer revolves around personal recognition.

“It’s so selfless because it’s not about me. It’s always about them,” he said, emphasizing that fulfillment now comes from serving others — whether behind the camera, supporting collaborators, or nurturing the people closest to him.

Once known for commanding scenes on screen, John Prats has quietly embraced a role that brings him deeper joy: contributing without needing applause. For him, the shift is not a retreat but a conscious choice to live with intention, clarity, and a heart at peace.
