SURALLAH, South Cotabato — A 15-year-old Grade 9 student is in critical condition after he was repeatedly hacked with a bladed weapon by a suspected member of the Citizens Armed Forces Geographical Unit (CAFGU) in Purok Arca, Barangay Colunggulo, Surallah, South Cotabato, on the evening of Saturday, 17 January 2026.
Police identified the victim by the alias “Phillip,” while the suspect was identified as “Jelmar,” 56, an alleged CAFGU member who fled the scene immediately after the incident. Authorities have launched a manhunt operation to locate and arrest the suspect.
According to the Surallah Municipal Police Station, the incident occurred at around 8 p.m. when the suspect confronted the minor and accused him of stealing a chicken. The confrontation escalated into a heated argument, during which the suspect allegedly drew a lagaraw—a long bladed weapon—from his waist and repeatedly hacked the teenager.
The victim sustained multiple wounds to different parts of his body. His mother immediately rushed him to the SOCCSKSARGEN General Hospital, where he remains in critical condition and is undergoing treatment.
Police said they are preparing the appropriate criminal charges against the suspect, while coordination with relevant authorities is ongoing to verify his alleged affiliation and ensure accountability.
The Surallah police continue to pursue the fleeing suspect and have urged the public to report any information that may lead to his arrest.
