Every January, people make New Year’s resolutions — only to forget or not follow them for the rest of the year.
But for Loida Nicolas Lewis, influential Filipino-American and best-selling author behind newly released book Look Younger When You’re Older, there is definitely a point in believing and fulfilling New Year’s resolutions.
In an exclusive interview at DAILY TRIBUNE office, the 80-year-old author of internationally-published Why Should Guys Have All the Fun? An Asian American Story of Love, Marriage, Motherhood and Running a Billion-Dollar Empire shared three tips for success for the younger generation, which they could consider to include in their New Year’s resolutions.
Be quiet
In today’s very noisy digital era, Lewis gave a very much needed advice: “For the young people, take time to be quiet.”
“Maybe five minutes. Just be quiet, counting your breath. OK, or just saying one word, positive word. Why? Because it’s so noisy outside. And when you are quiet, then God can talk to you, or you can talk to God. So, be quiet,” she affirmed.
Move
Since many people nowadays are stuck into computer work, sitting has been tagged by the World Health Organization as the “new smoking” or the “new epidemic.”
As such, Lewis offered a solution: “Number two, move!”
“Because when you’re always sitting down, that’s really unhealthy,” she noted.
Observe proper hydration
“And number three, drink water,” she reminded everyone, bringing into mind medical research recommending drinking eight glasses per day or a glass per hour at work.
“You have to drink a lot of water. How many? Well, you see us having eight glasses of water, but that is the minimum,” she said.
She recalled an incident when someone she knew died for taking hydration for granted.
“One of my secretaries was going to India to join a part of a group. Since she didn’t want to go to the toilet often, she drank water only the night before she left for India. On her way there, she did not drink for the whole 18 hours, so when she arrived there, she collapsed. So you see, dehydration, it could kill you. So don’t forget to drink enough water,” she warned.
Published by Anvil Publishing Inc., Look Younger When You’re Older will soon become available in bookstores nationwide. Apart from helpful and useful pieces of advice, the book spills Lewis’ secrets on how she has kept herself healthy and beautiful — Botox- and surgery-free — at 80.
