‘Stranger Things: Tales From ’85’: The Duffer Brothers’ next Netflix thriller

Now that Stranger Things has wrapped, fans are left missing the adventures of Hawkins. Matt and Ross Duffer, the creators behind the hit series, are developing several new shows for Netflix, ranging from animated escapades in the mid-1980s to chilling original dramas.

The first of these is Stranger Things: Tales From ’85, an animated series that takes place between the second and third seasons of the original show. The series reunites familiar characters, including Eleven, Mike and Max, as they face fresh supernatural threats in a snow-covered Hawkins. With animation, the storytellers have far more creative freedom, promising inventive scenarios and surprises that live action could never achieve. Ross Duffer noted in a recent release, “Animation opens the door to anything, and the team is taking full advantage.”

Another new project, The Boroughs, shifts the focus to an older cast. This supernatural drama unfolds in a quiet New Mexico retirement community, where a group of residents must come together to confront a mysterious force threatening to take something irreplaceable: their remaining time. Executive produced by the Duffers, the eight-part series blends suspense, humor, and heart, featuring actors such as Alfred Molina, Geena Davis, Alfre Woodard and Bill Pullman. The show promises a cast of quirky, engaging characters who face extraordinary circumstances.

The Duffers are also producing Something Very Bad Is Going to Happen, a tense horror series about a couple navigating the days before a wedding doomed to disaster. Created by emerging talent Haley Z. Boston, the series delivers a mix of dark humor, suspense and unsettling twists. Camila Morrone and Adam DiMarco star as the couple, supported by Jennifer Jason Leigh and Ted Levine. The Duffers praised Boston’s script as “original, terrifying, and darkly funny,” calling it a standout debut.

Together, these projects show the Duffers’ continued dedication to imaginative storytelling. While Hawkins may be behind them, audiences can expect plenty of thrills, humor, and intrigue in the next wave of Netflix originals.
