Young embroiderers Jheelie M. Maulion and May C. Marcellana from the barangay of Cawit in Taal demonstrate their skill in hand embroidery. The heritage town in Batangas is known for this traditional craft, especially the openwork embroidery locally called calado, as well as products with embroidery such as the barong Tagalog, gowns, shawls and accessories. The practice of hand embroidery has declined in recent years because, for one, the lack of interest among the youth. But Jheelie and May promise to continue to embroider, giving hope for the survival of the intangible heritage.
