The romance drama I’mPerfect achieved a landmark victory at the 51st Metro Manila Film Festival, becoming the first mainstream Filipino feature starring leads with Down syndrome to win Best Picture.
The film’s lead, Krystel Go, also made history as the first actor with Down syndrome to be named Best Actress in the festival's 51-year history. Produced by Nathan Studios and directed by Sigrid Andrea Bernardo, the film also received the Best Ensemble Performance (Special Jury Prize) at the ceremony held at the Dusit Thani Manila.
Bernardo, who first wrote the script in 2009, said the project faced years of rejection because many in the industry viewed the premise as too risky.
"Inclusivity is the one word I use to describe this historic milestone for Philippine cinema," Bernardo said. "I thought nobody would produce the film. I thank Nathan Studios for the fantastic opportunity."
Executive Producer Sylvia Sanchez, who championed the project after other studios turned it away, called the win a testament to the capabilities of the Down syndrome community.
“Persons with disability: you made history," Sanchez said during an emotional acceptance speech. "This award has proven to the public that people with Down syndrome are capable, professional, and worthy of the spotlight."
The film features Go and Earl Amaba in a romantic narrative, challenging traditional industry standards by casting neurodivergent actors to play the lead roles rather than relying on neurotypical actors to mimic them.
Bernardo said that while the awards are a "priceless icing on the cake," the true success was seeing her actors gain the recognition and platform they deserved.
I’mPerfect is currently showing in cinemas nationwide as part of the festival's official entries.
