The Department of Environment and Natural Resources (DENR) on Wednesday urged the public to observe eco-friendly and sustainable practices during the holiday season to help reduce waste and protect the environment.
The DENR reminded households to practice the 5Rs of waste management—refuse, reduce, reuse, repurpose, and recycle—especially during the holidays, when waste generation typically increases.
The agency also reiterated the vital role of local government units (LGUs) in ensuring proper waste management in accordance with Republic Act No. 9003, or the Ecological Solid Waste Management Act, stressing that effective waste management begins at the household and community levels.
During a recent year-end press conference, the DENR reported improvements in solid waste management nationwide, citing clearer accountability among stakeholders. The agency emphasized its continued collaboration with LGUs, regional offices, and partner institutions to strengthen compliance with environmental laws and waste management programs.
The DENR also highlighted progress in the implementation of the Extended Producer Responsibility (EPR) Act, or Republic Act No. 11898. As of October 2025, compliance reports from obligated enterprises showed that more than 120 million kilograms of rigid plastics and 124 million kilograms of flexible plastics were diverted during the 2024 compliance period. The country has already achieved a 56.12 percent recovery and diversion rate, exceeding the mandated target of 40 percent.
Beyond policies and regulations, the DENR stressed that individual actions remain crucial in reducing environmental impact, particularly during the holiday season.
To help households celebrate more sustainably, the DENR offered the following tips: choose reusable items over disposables; recycle old newspapers, magazines, or scrap paper as gift wrappers or paper bags; reuse holiday materials such as ribbons, gift wrappers, and décor; bring eco-bags when shopping to reduce plastic waste; and minimize food waste by serving reasonable portions and properly storing leftovers.
The DENR said mindful choices and small everyday actions can help protect the environment while allowing families and communities to enjoy meaningful holiday celebrations.
