Los Angeles police charged the son of Hollywood director Rob Reiner with murder Monday after the bodies of the 78-year-old actor-director and his 70-year-old wife, Michele Singer Reiner, were found stabbed in their Brentwood home.
Nick Reiner, 32, was arrested hours after the discovery.
“He was subsequently booked for murder and is being held,” Police Chief Jim McDonnell said.
Nick Reiner, who has a history of substance abuse, reportedly argued with his parents at a Hollywood party Saturday. TMZ said the bodies were found by the couple’s daughter, who told police another family member had killed them.
Former President Donald Trump made controversial remarks blaming Reiner for his own death.
Trump claimed the Reiners had died “reportedly due to the anger he caused others through his massive, unyielding, and incurable affliction with a mind crippling disease known as TRUMP DERANGEMENT SYNDROME.”
“He was known to have driven people CRAZY by his raging obsession,” Trump wrote, later saying Reiner was “very bad for our country.”
The comments were criticized by Republicans, including Rep. Thomas Massie, who called them “inappropriate and disrespectful.”
A beloved director
Rob Reiner, son of comedian Carl Reiner, was a politically active filmmaker known for This is Spinal Tap, The Princess Bride, Stand By Me and A Few Good Men.
John Cusack said he was “at a loss for any words that make sense.” Kathy Bates called him “brilliant and kind,” and Ben Stiller called him “a kind caring person who was really really funny.”
Former President Barack Obama said he and Michelle were “heartbroken,” while California Gov. Gavin Newsom said Reiner had “made California a better place.”
