The Philippine National Police (PNP) on Monday ordered the strict enforcement of a one-strike policy against indiscriminate firing as part of heightened security measures for the Christmas and New Year season.
Acting PNP chief Police Lt. Gen. Jose Melencio Nartatez Jr. said any civilian or police personnel caught firing a gun indiscriminately will face immediate action, with no warnings or second chances.
Nartatez said police officers involved in celebratory gunfire will face both administrative and criminal charges.
Administrative sanctions may include dismissal from the service, forfeiture of benefits, and perpetual disqualification from public office. Criminal charges may also be filed under the Revised Penal Code and other applicable laws, depending on the outcome of the investigation.
He also directed police commanders to ensure discipline within their ranks, warning that unit leaders will be held accountable for violations committed by their personnel.
All police units were instructed to immediately relieve and place under preventive suspension any PNP member implicated in indiscriminate firing while investigations are ongoing.
The PNP chief also reminded licensed civilian gun owners to strictly comply with firearms laws and exercise restraint during the holiday season, stressing that firearms should not be used in celebrations.
To support enforcement, the PNP activated reporting mechanisms, including hotlines and official social media platforms, to allow the public to report incidents of indiscriminate firing.
Police units were likewise ordered to respond promptly to verified reports.
