Households and businesses stand to benefit from a more reliable and cleaner power mix as Manila Electric Company (Meralco) moves to secure 200 megawatts (MW) of baseload renewable energy through a competitive bidding process.
Meralco said Monday it has started a Competitive Selection Process (CSP) after receiving a Certificate of Conformity from the Department of Energy (DOE) on 4 December, covering the utility’s latest DOE-approved Power Supply Procurement Plan.
The bidding seeks to help Meralco comply with the Renewable Portfolio Standards, which require power distributors to source part of their supply from renewable energy.
Power generation companies interested in supplying the capacity are invited to submit their Expressions of Interest by January 6. A pre-bid conference is set for 15 January 2026, while the deadline for bid submissions is 16 February.
The four-year power supply agreement that will result from the CSP is expected to cover Meralco’s 200 MW baseload requirement by 26 January , subject to approval by the Energy Regulatory Commission.
“This CSP is consistent with Meralco’s ongoing efforts to expand its supply portfolio sourced from renewable energy sources whilst securing Meralco’s RPS compliance through a competitive and transparent bidding process,” Meralco Senior Vice President and Head of Regulatory Management Atty. Jose Ronald V. Valles said.
Meralco said the bidding supports its long-term sustainability plans. The company has already contracted 1,536 MW of renewable energy capacity from various suppliers, surpassing its 1,500 MW target.
Renewable energy is projected to make up 22 percent of Meralco’s total power supply by 2030.
