The Bureau of Corrections (BuCor) transferred 300 persons deprived of liberty from New Bilibid Prison to Leyte Regional Prison in Abuyog, Leyte, this afternoon.
This was revealed by Bureau of Corrections Director General Gregorio Pio P. Catapang Jr. on Tuesday, who said the continued movement of PDLs is aimed at alleviating overcrowding at NBP and is part of a broader strategy in anticipation of the facility's planned closure in 2028.
Those who were transferred were escorted by a dedicated team of 75 corrections officers, which included members of the BuCor SWAT, medical personnel, and an escort group led by Chief Correctional Inspector Roberto Butawan.
They were supported by various security agencies, including the Philippine National Police in Muntinlupa, local provincial police, the South Luzon Expressway security group, and the Philippine Coast Guard, ensuring the safe and orderly relocation of the PDLs.
Catapang said this move reflects ongoing efforts to reform the corrections system while enhancing safety and security within the facilities.
