The Bureau of Corrections (BuCor) transferred 300 Persons Deprived of Liberty (PDLs) from the New Bilibid Prison (NBP) in Muntinlupa to the Leyte Regional Prison in Abuyog, Leyte, Tuesday afternoon.
BuCor director general Gregorio Catapang Jr. confirmed the relocation, saying that the continued movement of PDLs is part of a broader strategy to alleviate severe overcrowding at NBP.
The transfers are being conducted in anticipation of the facility’s planned closure in 2028.
The 300 inmates were escorted by a dedicated team of 75 corrections officers, including members of the BuCor SWAT team and medical personnel. The escort group was led by chief correctional inspector Roberto Butawan.
Multiple security agencies supported the transfer operation, ensuring the safe and orderly relocation.
These agencies included the Philippine National Police in Muntinlupa, local provincial police, the South Luzon Expressway security group, and the Philippine Coast Guard.
Catapang said the move reflects ongoing efforts to reform the corrections system while enhancing safety and security within the facilities.
