Journalist-councilor fatally stabbed in Surigao del Sur

MARIHATAG, SURIGAO DEL SUR — A respected broadcaster and sitting Sangguniang Bayan member was stabbed to death during his morning walk in Barangay Sta. Cruz around 7 a.m. on Friday, 06 December 2025.

The victim, identified as Gerry Campos, was a well-known news reporter and active municipal councilor. Initial police reports indicate that Campos was approached by a man who allegedly asked him for money. Moments later, for still-undetermined reasons, the suspect reportedly turned violent and stabbed him, killing him on the spot.

Police have yet to establish the motive behind the attack and have not released details on the suspect’s identity or any arrests. Investigators are pursuing multiple angles as they work to trace leads.

The killing sparked outrage among journalists, local officials, and residents, who described Campos as a dedicated public servant and committed member of the local media. Media organizations and civic groups condemned the attack and renewed calls for stronger protection for journalists and elected officials, especially in provincial areas.

Authorities assured the public of a thorough investigation as the community of Marihatag mourns the loss of a prominent voice in both governance and journalism.
