A 39-year-old male high school teacher was shot dead Saturday evening in what police described as a crime fueled by personal obsession.
Authorities said the suspect, a 52-year-old farmer, allegedly targeted the victim over his fixation with the teacher’s wife. Police characterized the motive as personal and calculated.
At around 7:55 p.m. on Nov. 23, the victim was sharing drinks with a fellow teacher in Barangay Poblacion Sur when the suspect opened fire. The victim suffered four gunshot wounds and was pronounced dead on arrival at Talavera General Hospital.
Talavera police launched Oplan Bakod, reviewing CCTV footage and interviewing witnesses. The suspect, a resident of Barangay Mabuhay, surrendered at 1 a.m. on Sunday, Nov. 24, with the assistance of his barangay captain and family.
Nueva Ecija Police Director Col. Heryl Bruno said the surrender came after intense pressure from authorities. “This was not random. The suspect’s fixation on the victim’s wife drove him to commit this act,” he said.
Colleagues at Talavera National High School described the victim as a dedicated mentor with no known enemies. Residents called the attack a wake-up call for tighter security in the town.
Bruno added that the suspect’s surrender reflects accountability in Nueva Ecija’s justice system. Police continue to investigate the suspect’s movements and motives, leaving the community grappling with the loss and questions about the depth of the obsession.
