The Gen-Atom craze continues this year as the country celebrates Atomic Energy Week (AEW) from 9–12 December, spearheaded by the Department of Science and Technology–Philippine Nuclear Research Institute (DOST-PNRI) in Commonwealth Avenue, Quezon City.

With the theme “I Juan-A Nuclear Philippines”, this year’s AEW highlights the growing enthusiasm of Filipinos—especially the youth—toward nuclear science and technology and their role in national development. The celebration promises an inclusive lineup of activities for every Juan and Juana who wants to learn more about the benefits of atom-based innovations.

Open-House Technical Exhibits

From 9–11 December, PNRI will once again open its doors to the public with a showcase of technical exhibits and free guided tours led by Filipino scientists and researchers. The exhibits will feature the country’s latest nuclear and radiation technologies, products, and services under five themes:

• Radiation in Daily Life – everyday uses of radiation
• Nuclear Science in Health Innovations – applications in medicine, therapy, and health physics
• Environmental Protection and Monitoring – nuclear techniques for tracking pollution and monitoring ecosystems
• Nuclear Energy, Safety, Security, and Safeguards – basics of nuclear energy, safety protocols, and highlights of the newly established PhilATOM
• Research and Innovation at PNRI – ongoing nuclear research projects

4th Philippine Nuclear Research and Development Conference

From 10–11 December, PNRI will host the 4th Philippine Nuclear Research and Development Conference (PNRDC 2025), serving as a venue for leading experts, researchers, educators, students, policymakers, and stakeholders to discuss the latest advancements in nuclear research, development, and innovation.

The conference will partner with a Scopus-indexed journal to publish a special issue featuring selected peer-reviewed full papers. Researchers, academics, and professionals nationwide are invited to submit abstracts for oral or poster presentations.

Myth Smashers Nuclear Science App Contest

Senior high school and college students will compete in developing mobile applications that debunk common myths and misconceptions about nuclear science — a concept reflecting the Gen-Z spirit of innovation and advocacy. The winning team, to be announced on 11 December, will represent the Philippines at the ANENT International Finals in March 2026.

Recognition and community celebration

To conclude the week, DOST-PNRI will honor its Civil Service Awardees and other institutional recipients. The Institute will also hold an Employees’ Day with raffles, games, and activities to celebrate a year of accomplishments.

As mandated under Presidential Proclamation No. 1211 (1973), Atomic Energy Week serves as the Institute’s annual culmination of efforts to raise public awareness on the beneficial applications of nuclear science and technology.
