The Department of Science and Technology–Science and Technology Information Institute (DOST-STII) has opened its doors for a series of activities promoting its library services from 11 to 14 November in celebration of Library and Information Services Month (LISM).

With the theme “LACE-UP: Libraries — a Hub for Cultural Exploration and Unity Through Partnership,” this year’s celebration highlights the vital role of libraries as inclusive spaces supporting literacy, cultural engagement, and inter-agency collaboration.

“‘LACE-UP’ speaks of binding together, weaving relationships, and moving forward in harmony. This means tying together stories, people, and ideas in a way that empowers communities. Through books, media, exhibitions, and programs, libraries become spaces of cultural exploration so visitors can journey through history, art, language, and tradition,” DOST Undersecretary for Scientific and Technical Services Maridon O. Sahagun said.

Sahagun emphasized that libraries foster creative partnerships that connect librarians with educators, artists, and the general public through a shared wellspring of knowledge and ideas.

One of the highlights of the opening ceremony was the launch of the DOST-STII Library Makerspace—a collaborative area designed for clients to engage in hands-on, creative activities blending technology, craft, and innovation.

According to the Library Services Section of the Information Resources and Analysis Division (IRAD), the makerspace promotes learning, creativity, and problem-solving through workshops, classes, and open hours where users can work on personal projects and explore new skills.

Throughout the four-day celebration, DOST-STII also held a series of learning sessions, including Hands-on Science Experiments by ScienceStar Corp.; a Workshop on Research Design Framework by DOST-STII; storytelling, puppet shows, and arts and crafts conducted with the National Library of the Philippines; and an Introduction to Robotics by Felta Multi-Media Incorporated.

DOST-STII is one of the department’s 18 attached agencies, mandated to maintain a science and technology databank and library, disseminate information, and facilitate S&T training.

Its observance of LIS Month forms part of the broader OneDOST4U initiative, which aims to provide science-based, innovative, and inclusive solutions across four strategic pillars: human well-being, wealth creation, wealth protection, and sustainability.
