CAGAYAN DE ORO CITY — With typhoon "Uwan" unleashing heavy rains and strong winds across Mindanao, authorities in Cagayan de Oro City and Misamis Oriental have ordered forced evacuations in several coastal and upland barangays due to the threat of flash floods, landslides and storm surges.
In Cagayan de Oro, City Disaster Risk Reduction and Management Office (CDRRMO) chief Nick Jabagat reported that nearly 1,000 individuals have been evacuated from Barangay Pagatpat and the coastal communities of Bulua, Bonbon, and Bayabas.
The evacuees are currently staying in covered courts equipped with modular tents to ensure privacy and safety for each family. The City Social Welfare and Development Department (CSWD) has also distributed relief packs, food, and drinking water to affected residents.
Continuous rains triggered minor landslides and flash floods in upland barangays, causing fallen trees and soil erosion, though no casualties have been reported within the city.
In neighboring Misamis Oriental, Provincial Disaster Risk Reduction and Management Officer (PDRRMO) Fernando Dy confirmed similar evacuation operations in the city of El Salvador, particularly in the coastal barangay of Molugan, as well as in parts of Opol town due to rising water levels.
Dy said storm surge alerts are in effect across several towns along the province’s western coast, including Jasaan, Villanueva, Tagoloan, Balingasag, Balingoan, Libertad and Magsaysay. These areas are being closely monitored for possible flooding and wave damage.
In El Salvador’s Barangay Molugan, residents spotted a waterspout (locally known as “alimpolos”) forming over Macajalar Bay, though it dissipated as it moved toward the open sea.
