Jon M. Chu is ready to dive back into the dazzling world of Crazy Rich Asians.

The visionary director behind the 2018 global phenomenon — adapted from Kevin Kwan’s bestselling novel — recently confirmed to Esquire that the long-awaited HBO Max series set in the same glittering universe is officially in motion.

“It’s a real thing,” Chu revealed. “We have scripts, and we’re waiting to be officially ready to go.”

While details remain under wraps, Chu hinted that the series will expand the franchise in fresh and unexpected directions.

“It’s hard to do a direct continuation of the books, because our characters changed so much in the first movie,” he explained. “It’s so different from the books, actually, even though it feels like it’s the same. So you couldn’t go one-to-one. But we can use a lot of inspiration from the book to dig out more story from it.”

Although no cast members from the original film have been confirmed to return, Chu is confident that familiar faces will reappear when the cameras start rolling.

“I have no doubt our cast will be there,” he said.

The series will be helmed by Crazy Rich Asians co-writer Adele Lim, who steps in as showrunner and executive producer, alongside Chu, who will also executive produce.
