The Department of the Interior and Local Government (DILG) on Monday urged all local government units (LGUs) and residents near Taal and Kanlaon volcanoes to remain on full alert as volcanic activity continues in both areas.
Following the 24 October eruption of Kanlaon Volcano, the Philippine Institute of Volcanology and Seismology (PHIVOLCS) has maintained Alert Level 2, indicating moderate unrest and the possibility of further ash emissions or short-lived explosions.
Residents within the 4-kilometer Permanent Danger Zone are reminded to stay evacuated, while those within 6 kilometers of the summit must remain vigilant and ready should volcanic activity intensify.
“LGUs are directed to activate their Local Disaster Risk Reduction and Management Councils (LDRRMCs), preposition emergency supplies, and ensure the readiness and safety of evacuation centers. Continuous coordination with PHIVOLCS and concerned local authorities is strongly urged,” the DILG said.
In a separate advisory, the Department also directed local chief executives in Batangas and Cavite to implement critical preparedness measures as Taal Volcano remains under Alert Level 1 following two minor phreatomagmatic eruptions at its main crater on 26 October.
The DILG reminded LGUs to strictly prohibit entry into Taal Volcano Island, particularly the Main Crater and Daang Kastila fissure. Local governments must also prepare for potential increases in volcanic sulfur dioxide and enforce proper health measures to protect residents.
Coordination with the Regional Disaster Risk Reduction and Management Council (RDRRMC) Calabarzon is likewise advised to ensure timely and unified preparedness actions.
The public is urged to observe health precautions such as wearing N95 masks, avoiding eye contact with ash particles, and staying hydrated. Households are encouraged to keep emergency “go bags” ready, containing water, food, protective equipment, clothing, first aid kits, and essential medicines.
The Department reiterated the importance of following verified advisories from PHIVOLCS, the NDRRMC, and local government units.
