Darren Espanto reveals story behind ‘Dati’ duet with Belle Mariano

Singer-actor Darren Espanto has finally shared the story behind his much-talked-about collaboration with Belle Mariano for their reimagined version of the beloved OPM hit “Dati.”

Originally performed by Sam Concepcion and Tippy Dos Santos a decade ago, “Dati” was never intended to be revived—until Darren and Belle performed it live at her concert. “I didn’t expect it at first because it was just a duet we had to do for [Belle’s] concert,” Darren recalled. “Then everyone wanted us to do it again on ASAP, so we performed it during ASAP Milan.”

After their chemistry captivated fans, countless requests poured in for a studio version. “Everyone wanted a studio version of ‘Dati’ by Belle and Darren,” he shared. “So Star Music asked us if we were okay to record our own version—coincidentally, it was the song’s 10th anniversary.”

Working with Belle, Darren had nothing but praise for his fellow artist. “Belle is so easy to work with. She’s always game, very professional, and genuinely kind. I’m really grateful to have a friend like her,” he said. He also expressed his gratitude to original performers Sam Concepcion and Tippy Dos Santos, as well as composer Thyro Alfaro, for giving their blessing to the revival. “It was a lot of fun being able to re-record such an iconic song that everyone knows.”

Their version of “Dati” is included in Darren’s latest album, Ikaw Pa Rin, released in July to mark his 11th anniversary in the entertainment industry. The 13-track record explores themes of love, longing, and resilience, featuring songs like “Bibitaw Na,” “Hanggang Kailan,” “Ilang Beses,” “Iyo,” “Paano Kung Tayo Na Lang?” and the title track “Ikaw Pa Rin.”

With “Dati,” Darren and Belle not only pay tribute to an OPM classic—they breathe new life into it, showing that timeless love songs can always find their way back to the hearts of a new generation.
