Residents of Baseco, Manila, are seen filling containers with rationed water on Saturday, 25 October. According to residents, the shortage of usable water has been ongoing for two months, forcing them to wait for deliveries and endure long lines under the scorching heat.

Clean water and sanitation are part of the United Nations’ Sustainable Development Goals, which aim to ensure the availability and sustainable management of water and sanitation for all by 2030.

The goal includes targets for universal and equitable access to safe drinking water, adequate sanitation, reducing pollution, improving water quality, increasing water-use efficiency, and expanding international cooperation. It is crucial for human health, as millions die each year from diseases linked to unsafe water and poor sanitation.
