Alex Eala and Nadiia Kichenok of Ukraine smashed the Russian pair of Polina Kudermetova and Kamilla Rakhimova, 6-3, 7-5, on Friday in China.
The Filipino-Ukrainian duo is coming off a 6-4, 6-2 sweep over Emily Appleton of Great Britain and home bet Qianhui Tang in the Round of 16.
Eala and Kichenok pulled off the latest win in one hour and 17 minutes as they inch closer to this Women’s Tennis Association (WTA) 250 title.
Tied at 3-3 in the first set, Eala and Kichenok won the next three games to take a 1-0 lead.
Eala and Kichenok won back-to-back games in the second set to not only break a 5-5 deadlock but also complete the sweep.
They will be taking on Janice Tjen of Indonesia and Katarzyna Piter of Poland on Saturday.
Eala will have some sort of a shot at redemption at Tjen after her 4-6, 1-6 loss in the quarterfinal of the Sao Paulo Open last September in Brazil.
Should Eala win it all with Kichenok in Guangzhou, it will be her second WTA title overall since the Guadalajara 125 Open in Mexico last September.
After the Guangzhou Open, Eala will be competing in the Hong Kong Open.
