Marcos says PCG modernization on track

President Ferdinand R. Marcos Jr. on Thursday vowed sustained government support for the modernization and welfare programs of the Philippine Coast Guard (PCG), lauding its vital role in maritime safety, disaster response, and national security, particularly amid the tension in the West Philippine Sea.

Speaking during the PCG’s 124th founding anniversary at its Manila headquarters, Marcos commended the Coast Guard personnels’ courage and dedication to duty.

“In these times when our seas face greater challenges, you remain steadfast, proving that courage knows no tides and that service knows no bounds,” he said. “You stand as guardians of safety and stability. And in return, I assure you that this government is solidly behind you.”

The President cited the PCG’s accomplishments over the past year, including the evacuation of over one million people during natural disasters, the safe passage of nearly 10 million passengers, and the confiscation of about P2 billion worth of illegal drugs and smuggled goods.

He also praised the Coast Guard’s swift response following the 6.9-magnitude earthquake in Cebu, where its personnel distributed 30,000 food packs and medical kits and conducted more than 100 medical interventions within 72 hours.

Marcos reaffirmed his administration’s commitment to modernizing the PCG through investments in new vessels, infrastructure, and enhanced training.

“We will keep investing in new vessels, aircraft, command posts, and communication systems,” he said. “We will improve training, facilities, and logistics to provide every PCG personnel a sense of dignity in fulfilling their roles.”

He highlighted ongoing infrastructure projects such as the PCG General Hospital, the Maritime Law Enforcement Training Center in Misibis, and the First Responder and Nursing Service Facility, saying these reflect the government’s commitment to improving the welfare and operational readiness of PCG personnel.
