NORZAGARAY, Bulacan – A clash between Army troops and insurgents in the mountainous terrain of this municipality on 17 October resulted in one death, the latest in the region's ongoing conflict.
The incident occurred at approximately 02:40 p.m. when a platoon from the 73rd Division Reconnaissance Company (73DRC) engaged around 20 armed insurgents in Sitio Balagbag, Barangay San Lorenzo, according to the Philippine Army. The troops, led by 2nd Lieutenant Michael Angelo A. Apostol, were conducting combat clearing operations under the 703rd Infantry “Agila” Brigade.
Military sources said the operation followed a tip from a local resident about armed individuals extorting civilians. As troops advanced, insurgents opened fire, triggering a brief exchange that forced the rebels to retreat northwest.
Soldiers recovered an M14 rifle, five jungle packs, and the body of the slain insurgent, whose identity is pending verification. No government casualties were reported.
Brigadier General Eugenio Julio C. Osias IV, commander of the 703rd Brigade, praised troops for their discipline and emphasized the role of community cooperation: “This isn’t just a military win—it’s a blueprint for how trust between citizens and soldiers can isolate lawless elements.” He urged remaining rebels to surrender and avail of livelihood programs under the National Task Force to End Local Communist Armed Conflict (NTF-ELCAC).
Authorities have intensified pursuit operations and checkpoint deployments to prevent regrouping. Coordination with the Philippine National Police and local officials has also tightened.
The clash highlights waning insurgent influence in Central Luzon amid sustained military operations and civilian collaboration. However, experts warn that long-term peace hinges on addressing root causes like poverty and land rights.
Local officials pledged to accelerate infrastructure projects in Sitio Balagbag to curb rebel recruitment through improved education and farming support.
