Maki paints a masterpiece

‘Bughaw’ music video drops ahead of debut album Kolorcoaster

Jefferson Fernando

Singer-songwriter Maki is painting love in every shade imaginable. Following the success of his emotionally resonant tracks “Dilaw” and “Namumula,” the Kapamilya breakout artist completes his color-coded trilogy with the release of the official music video for “Bughaw,” a ballad that speaks of lasting, eternal love.

Launched in a vibrant, intimate event, Maki took the stage not just as a performer — but as a storyteller and visual artist.

“I conceptualized it as experiencing love in different colors,” he shared. “‘Bughaw’ is a love that lasts forever. ‘Dilaw’ was one kind of love, ‘Namumula’ was passionate and obsessive… and this one, this is about the kind of love that stays, even when the right people haven’t come yet.”

Color, concept, closure

Maki’s fascination with color has been more than just aesthetic — it is symbolic. With each hue, he offers a different perspective on love and longing. Now, with “Bughaw,” the trilogy comes full circle in the most poignant way possible.

“This was a surprise song from my concert, The Maki Concert. And ngayon, you get to see the things we’ve worked on for a month or two.”

Taking full creative control, Maki even directed large parts of the music video himself. “It’s a dream-come-true moment. It was hard, but I enjoyed it. And I know it’s something I want do for a long time.”

Introducing ‘Kolorcoaster’

More color is coming — a full spectrum, in fact. Maki officially announced his much-anticipated debut album, Kolorcoaster, set to be released on 19 September under Tarsier Records.

“It’s going to be a hell of a ride,” Maki teased. “Sobrang daming effort na ibinigay dito (A lot of effort went into this). It’s going to be an album full of colors — but also full of songs na hindi niyo pa naririnig sa akin (that you haven’t heard from me). Very fresh. A whole new concept.”

The album will include 10 tracks, including his previously released hits “Dilaw,” “Namumula,” “Bughaw,” and the latest single, “Kahel na Langit.”

Rising star on the global stage

Fresh from his successful US tour with Silent Sanctuary and Canada tour with James Reid, Maki met his passionate fanbase — affectionately called “Zushis” — in major cities including Seattle, Los Angeles, Las Vegas, New York, Toronto and Calgary.

Back in the Philippines, his momentum continues with two major wins at the New Hue Video Music Awards 2025: Male Artist of the Year and Song of the Year for “Dilaw.” International recognition followed with four nominations at the Jupiter Music Awards, including Collaboration of the Year for “Sikulo” with Angela Ken and Nhiko.

What’s next?

With “Bughaw” closing his first major narrative arc and Kolorcoaster on the horizon, Maki is cementing his place as one of the most compelling voices in Filipino music today — balancing pop appeal with heartfelt storytelling and creative risk.
