In a gripping scene of courage and compassion, a man squeezed his body through a wall opening to rescue a newborn baby who had been abandoned in a narrow canal between two houses in Cavite.
According to a report by GMA News' Oscar Oida, residents in the neighborhood said they heard the faint cries of a baby on Monday. When they peered through the narrow space between the two concrete walls, they were shocked to find a naked infant lying helplessly in the canal below.
With no easy access to the canal, a male resident took the initiative to climb through a square hole in the wall typically used for an exhaust fan. From there, he wedged himself between the walls — barely a foot apart — and slowly maneuvered down.
Using one hand, the man managed to reach the baby and carefully lifted the newborn toward the small opening, where neighbors were waiting to receive the infant. The child was immediately wrapped in a cloth for warmth and protection.
Authorities rushed the baby to a nearby hospital, where medical staff continue to observe the infant’s condition. Police confirmed the incident and have since launched an investigation to determine how the baby ended up in the canal.
Preliminary findings from the barangay suggest that a minor in the community may have given birth to the child. The young mother, whose identity is being withheld due to her age, is reportedly in stable condition and currently under the care of her relatives.
Both mother and baby are now safe, according to local officials, though the incident has sparked concern and calls for better awareness of teen pregnancies and child welfare.
