Alas all set for Utah stint

Kieffer Alas is set to fly to the United States on 8 August for his stint with Layton Christian Academy in Utah.

Alas’ father Louie told DAILY TRIBUNE the 18-year-old prodigy has been training alongside players from Ateneo de Manila University and De La Salle University while he is in the Philippines.

Last May saw Alas train with National Basketball League 1 (NBL 1) West side Warwick Senators in Perth, Australia.

“His papers are all set. He's just working on his conditioning,” the elder Alas said.

“He practiced with different teams like Ateneo and La Salle. It's going well.”

Alas has the luxury of learning under mentors Tab Baldwin and Topex Robinson as he braces for his US debut.

Alas also played for Antipolo in the U18 division of the Junior Maharlika Pilipinas Basketball League (Jr. MPBL) to get some much-needed game exposure before he heads to Salt Lake City.

The former University Athletic Association of the Philippines Most Valuable Player’s best game in the Jr. MPBL so far was 26 points, nine rebounds, and four assists in Antipolo’s 69-61 win over Las Piñas last 5 July at the Ynares Sports Arena in Pasig City.

Louie, regarded as one of the most respected tacticians in the country, said the initial plan is to get his son to the United States.
