Transportation safety investigators have determined why a small plane crashed in remote western Alaska, USA, in 2023, killing its lone pilot.
The Piper PA-18-150 Super Cub, piloted by Eugene Peltola Jr. en route from St. Mary’s airstrip to Holy Cross, weighed beyond its capacity, National Transportation Safety Board Alaska region chief Clint Johnson told KYES-TV on 23 July.
Investigators found 150 pounds of moose meat aboard the aircraft, and antlers were tied to the plane’s right wing—a common practice in Alaska, but one that requires approval from the Federal Aviation Administration, according to CBS News.
Johnson said the plane took off extra heavy, and the antlers caused drag that was worsened by wind turbulence, leading to the crash.
Meanwhile, Europe’s biggest airline, Ryanair, has come up with a new scheme to prevent overloading.
CEO Michael O’Leary told RTE Morning Ireland that the airline is targeting passengers with excess baggage.
“We’re flying largely full flights; about half the passengers can bring two bags, and the other half can only bring one—because that’s all that fits in the plane,” CNN quoted him as saying.
Under its planned baggage watch scheme, Ryanair agents who identify and charge for oversized bags will get cash incentives of around €1.50 per bag.
