The Department of Social Welfare and Development (DSWD) on Sunday expressed its gratitude to Philippine National Police (PNP) Chief Gen. Nicolas Torre III for donating the more than P16 million proceeds from the “Boxing for a Cause: Laban sa Nasalanta” charity event held at the Rizal Memorial Coliseum in Manila.

“We thank Gen. Torre and the PNP for donating to the DSWD the more than P16 million that came from the proceeds of the boxing match. The huge amount of donation will go a long way in terms of assistance to millions of our fellow Filipinos who were affected by the habagat and other weather disturbances,” said Assistant Secretary Irene Dumlao, DSWD spokesperson.

The PNP collected over P300,000 from ticket sales and more than P16 million in donations during the charity boxing event, which Gen. Torre won by default. The total amount will be officially turned over to the DSWD this week.

As of Friday, July 25, the DSWD reported that it has extended over P293 million in assistance to families and individuals affected by recent weather disturbances across the country.
