ZUS Coffee scored a major upset after bringing down fancied Creamline, 24-26, 25-20, 25-23, 22-25, 15-11, in the Premier Volleyball League (PVL) On Tour Saturday at the City of Passi Arena in Iloilo.

Rookie AC Miner and Chinnie Arroyo provided the spark in the fifth set as the Thunderbelles improved to a 2-1 win-loss record in Pool B and notched their first-ever victory over the Cool Smashers since joining the league in 2023.

Arroyo finished with 23 points with all but one coming off kills, Miner got 16 markers and Jovelyn Gonzaga added 12 points in ZUS Coffee’s second straight victory.

“It’s great that we’re showing improvement. We’re moving slowly but that’s what we want, moving progressively and improving,” Thunderbelles head coach Jerry Yee said.

ZUS Coffee will try to carry the momentum of the upset against Cignal on Sunday.

“We’re grateful for the win but we still have lots of work to do. Tomorrow (Sunday) is another day, another big team to play against,” he added.

Miner and Arroyo had three points each in a crucial 8-3 run that broke a 4-4 deadlock in the deciding frame to give the Thunderbelles some breathing room, 11-7.

The Cool Smashers mounted a strong fightback and saved two match points, 14-11, but Rose Vargas crumbled under pressure with a service error to end the match.

Creamline dropped to a 2-2 mark despite Jema Galanza’s 21-point effort. Alyssa Valdez had 16 points and 21 excellent receptions while Michele Gumabao added 14 markers.
