The Holy Father Pope Leo XIV has appointed the Most Reverend Alberto "Abet" S. Uy, 58 years old, as the new Archbishop of Cebu.
The appointment came after Cebu Archbishop Jose S. Palma retired.
The announcement was made through the Vatican's Daily Bulletin. Bishop Abet is a native of Bohol.
He obtained his Degree in Philosophy at the Immaculate Heart of Mary Seminary in Tagbilaran, and finished his Theological Studies at the St. John Mary Vianney Theological Seminary in Cagayan de Oro City. He obtained his Doctorate in Sacred Theology from the Pontifical Gregorian University in Rome.
In 2016, he was appointed by Pope Francis as the Bishop of Tagbilaran.
He is an environmental advocate, with a heart for the poor and the marginalized.
He was ordained as priest in the Diocese of Talibon in 1993.
Cebu is known as the cradle of Christianity in the Philippines with 4.7 million Catholics and 170 parishes.
Based on 2023 record, the Archdiocese of Cebu has 375 diocesan clergy and 278 religious priests.
