A robbery-holdup suspect in Malabon City was swarmed by the public after allegedly stealing a phone in Barangay Potrero.
According to the police report, a 20-year-old helper was on his way home when the suspect, identified only as “Anthony,” suddenly appeared and threatened him with a bladed weapon.
"The victim’s scream during the theft caught the attention of the public, leading to the suspect being cornered and immediately apprehended by patrolling officers,” said Police Captain Eduardo Antalan of the Malabon City Police.
Responding officers recovered a 12-inch kitchen knife and the stolen mobile phone.
Antalan said the suspect has undergone inquest proceedings and will face robbery charges.
In an interview, visible bruises were seen on Anthony’s face, and he complained of body pain, particularly in his stomach.
"I was swarmed by the people in the area," the suspect recalled in Filipino when asked about the cause of the body pains and bruises.
He added that he regretted the crime and admitted that he committed it due to extreme financial need.
The suspect is currently detained at Malabon City Police Custodial Facility.
