A person with disability was arrested by jail officers last Sunday after being caught attempting to smuggle illegal drugs during a routine search while visiting her imprisoned husband.
During a body search, jail officers noticed a bulge in the groin area of the suspect, identified as “Dina,” which raised suspicion.
"Initially, the searchers said he appeared restless. She was also informed that a searching procedure would be conducted, but the searchers began to suspect there was a reason behind her uneasiness,” Caloocan City Jail Warden Jail Superintendent Ellen Barrios said.
Officers discovered the contraband items hidden in the suspect’s underwear near the groin area.
They recovered two sachets of suspected marijuana weighing approximately 35 grams, and a plastic sachet containing about 45 grams of suspected shabu.
The illegal drugs have a combined estimated value of P310,000.
Barrios added that upon investigation, the suspect claimed she attempted to smuggle in the drugs due to financial hardship.
"She only said it was out of necessity. She just wanted to try it, and he also said that she hasn’t talked to anyone yet inside the city jail — but if she does get in, she plans to offer and sell it there,” the jail officer said.
It was found that Dina is a frequent visitor to the facility, regularly visiting her husband who is jailed for murder.
Reports also indicated that the suspect intended to use the proceeds from selling the drugs to finance the construction of her house.
Dina is temporarily detained at Caloocan City Jail and will be transferred to the female dormitory of the Bureau of Jail Management and Penology (BJMP) in Malabon City.
She will face charges for violating Republic Act No. 9165 as operatives await results of her drug test.
The warden emphasized that all visitors are subject to frisking, noting that cigarettes, bladed weapons, and electronic gadgets are prohibited inside the jail.
