Thousands of Filipinos in Australia are expected to gather at Parliament Gardens in Melbourne on Sunday, 23 June, for a “Free Duterte Now” rally in support of former President Rodrigo Roa Duterte, who is currently detained at the International Criminal Court (ICC) in The Hague, Netherlands, pending trial for alleged crimes against humanity.
Organizers confirmed that Vice President Sara Duterte, the former president’s daughter, will attend the event as a special guest. They described the rally as a “people’s movement” aimed at promoting unity and advocating for truth and justice. Promotional materials emphasize that no donations or solicitations will be accepted during the event.
The gathering, set from 10:00 AM to 4:00 PM, is spearheaded by the Duterte Down Under movement, which called the rally an opportunity for nationwide solidarity among Filipino-Australians.
“This will be a good opportunity for Duterte supporters not only in Melbourne but across Australia to come together and join this public rally calling on the ICC to free FPRRD,” the group said.
Supporters from Sydney, Canberra, Adelaide, Brisbane, and Darwin are expected to participate. The group also noted excitement over VP Sara’s first visit to Australia.
