Barangay official nabbed in Nueva Era drug sting

A barangay kagawad and former drug surrenderee was arrested during a buy-bust operation on Tuesday morning in Barangobong, Nueva Era.

The suspect, identified as Edimar Watson y Salmazan, 35 years old, was apprehended at around 10:56 a.m. by joint operatives of the Nueva Era Municipal Police Station led by PCPT William Lu Sotelo, in coordination with RID PRO1, PDEU-INPPO, PIU, 2nd PMFC, 101st and 103rd RMFB, and PDEA Region 1.

Authorities seized from his possession approximately 3 grams of suspected shabu, valued at ₱20,400, contained in 13 small heat-sealed sachets. Also confiscated were a black coin purse, a marked ₱1,000 bill, two lighters, a black plastic container, a glass tube, assorted coins, and eight rounds of .22 caliber ammunition.

When DAILY TRIBUNE attempted to interview Watson, he denied ownership of the drug evidence and paraphernalia, claiming they were planted. However, he admitted possession of the ammunition, stating they were intended for hunting. He also confirmed that he had used illegal drugs two days prior to his arrest.

The suspect was informed of his constitutional rights in a dialect he understood and was subjected to standard booking procedures and a medical examination at the Nueva Era RHU.

Police confirmed that the buy-bust was conducted using body-worn cameras, in compliance with mandated protocols under the Rules on BWC and Republic Act 9165, also known as the Comprehensive Dangerous Drugs Act. Charges are now being prepared for filing in court.
