A manhunt is underway in the Brooklyn Park area after a man allegedly impersonated a police officer and shot two Minnesota lawmakers early Saturday in what authorities suspect to be a targeted attack.
Local news outlets report that State Senator John Hoffman and Representative Melissa Hortman were shot in separate incidents at their respective residences in Champlin and Brooklyn Park. Details on their conditions have not yet been made public.
The suspect is described as a white male with brown hair, last seen wearing blue clothing under black body armor. Law enforcement has urged the public to avoid any interaction with the man and to report sightings immediately via 911.
Residents have been cautioned not to open their doors unless approached by two officers and to verify any officer's identity by calling 911 before engaging.
Minnesota Governor Tim Walz confirmed he has been briefed on the situation and has activated the State Emergency Operations Center to support local law enforcement in Champlin and Brooklyn Park. He assured the public that state resources are being mobilized to assist in the investigation and ongoing response.
Authorities have yet to confirm the motive behind the shootings. More updates are expected as the investigation continues.
