Marcos taps LWUA to probe school water issues

President Ferdinand Marcos Jr. has directed the Local Water Utilities Administration (LWUA) to investigate the loss of water service in elementary schools in Bulacan.

 During his visit to Tibagan Elementary School and Barihan Elementary School in Bulacan, Marcos discovered bathrooms that are in need of repair. He found that some of the bathrooms are no longer connected to water despite operating as public schools.

 According to Palace Press Officer Undersecretary Claire Castro, the loss of water service is not just a concern for cleanliness and the health of students but also for their dignity.

 “How could they study well if the school itself lack basic services?” Castro asked. 

LWUA is given 48 hours to submit findings of initial reports into the issue.

 “The LWUA has been ordered to immediately conduct an investigation. Who is responsible? Why is there no water? And how can it be restored before classes open next week,” she said.

Castro also emphasized Marcos’ directives that the government is accountable not just to the students but also to the parents who rely on the government.

 “It is our responsibility to ensure that there are proper facilities, adequate support for teachers, and a functioning system because that is the foundation of a safe, orderly, and effective education. And ultimately, our goal is peace of mind for every parent,” she said.

 Schools across the country are in preparation mode as “Brigada Eskwela” goes underway. Repairs and rehabilitations of schools will last until Friday, 13 June. The official opening of classes in public schools will be on Monday, 16 June.
