Paris Olympics double gold medalist Carlos Yulo picked up his fourth straight gold medal in the floor exercise Saturday in the 12th Senior Asian Artistic Gymnastics Championships in Jecheon, South Korea.
With a score of 14.600 points, Yulo proved he still got it despite not being able to compete for 10 months.
Prior to his victory, Yulo dominated the floor exercise of the 2022 Asian Championships in Doha, 2023 in Singapore, and 2024 in Tashkent.
Yulo now has two medals from the Asian meet following his bronze medal finish in the individual all-around last Thursday.
Milad Karimi of Kazakhstan settled for a silver medal with 14.400, while home bet Moon Geonyoung of South Korea got a bronze medal with 14.033 points.
Gymnastics Association of the Philippines president Cynthia Carrion told DAILY TRIBUNE that Yulo is on track to win more gold medals as he competes in the vault, parallel bars and horizontal bar on Sunday at 2 p.m. (Manila time)
Joining Yulo in the vault final is Southeast Asian Games gold medalist John Ivan Cruz.
“He said he’s gonna do his best because he’s gonna put all the skills that he did in the Olympics because he had a high score there,” Carrion said in a telephone conversation.
“He still has both p-bar and horizontal bar, but let’s hope he gets at least another gold.”
Yulo is also using the Asian championships to get warmed up for the Artistic Gymnastics World Championships in Jakarta this October.
Then Yulo will be tapped as well to beef up the Philippine delegation to the 33rd Southeast Asian Games in Thailand in December.
Should Yulo win his remaining events in Korea, he will equal his gold medal tally from last year with four mints.
Another Yulo will also be vying for gold medal as Karl Eldrew, younger brother of Carlos, qualified in four finals in the junior division.
Eldrew will be competing in the floor exercise, vault, pommel horse, and horizontal bar on Sunday as well.
The 16-year-old Eldrew will be defending the gold medal he got in the vault last year in Tashkent, Uzbekistan.
Eldrew fell short in the individual all-around of the juniors division after finishing in ninth place with a score of 75.698 points.
