Officials from the Department of Transportation and Civil Aviation Authority of the Philippines visited Siargao airport to check on the planned expansion of its passenger terminal, which is expected to be completed by December 2025.

“Bumalik tayo para masimulan na agad-agad ang construction ng terminal expansion dito sa Siargao airport,” said Transportation Secretary Vince Dizon.

To fast-track improvements, a modular terminal expansion is now underway. Once completed, it will more than triple the current seating capacity from around 200 to over 600, with completion targeted by the end of 2025.

The move aligns with President Ferdinand Marcos Jr.’s broader directive to enhance regional airports as key drivers of economic activity and tourism. CAAP was also instructed to ensure that the project complies with international aviation safety and capacity standards to better serve both locals and tourists.

Long-term plans include a new world-class passenger terminal and a runway extension to support the island's potential as an international gateway. Architect Royal Pineda and designer Kenneth Cobonpue also joined the inspection, offering insights as part of the creative team behind the airport’s upcoming design.

The airport currently handles an average of 17 commercial flights daily, highlighting the urgent need for infrastructure upgrades to match Siargao’s popularity as a prime travel destination.
