Foreign Affairs Undersecretary Eduardo de Vega announced on Sunday that 11 of the 15 Asian nationals imprisoned in Nigeria will receive legal assistance from the Philippine government.
“Our embassy is working on the case. They will be provided legal assistance,” De Vega said.
The convicted Filipino nationals were identified as Winnie De Jesus, Kayceelynn Remorin, Irish Chna, Darwisa Esmael, Kimberly Nisperos, Savien Cire Renovilla, Jessa Sanchi, Jhena Sarmiento, Rain Torida, Rex Jose Dilag (also known as Madison), and Beverlyin Gumayo (also known as Veb Sumayo).
On Friday, 30 May, a court in Lagos sentenced them to one year in prison and imposed a fine of ₦1,000,000 (approximately P75,000) each for charges related to cyber-terrorism and internet fraud.
