PCG welcomes 40 fast patrol crafts

The Philippine Coast Guard (PCG) is set to receive 40 fast patrol craft from a French shipbuilder as part of its ongoing modernization efforts, the Department of Transportation announced Thursday.

Transportation Secretary Vince Dizon and PCG commandant Admiral Ronnie Gil Gavan signed the acquisition deal with French Ambassador to the Philippines Marie Fontanel and Roland Joassard, chief executive officer of French shipbuilder OCEA S.A.

OCEA S.A. describes its fast patrol craft on its website as versatile and easy to operate, offering adaptability and flexibility. “While remaining simple to maintain, these vessels provide the level of performance and reliability you need for your missions,” the company stated.

The acquisition of these vessels is part of the PCG Modernization Program.

The contract was supported by a government-to-government financing agreement under the Agreement on Financial and Development Cooperation, which is also expected to strengthen ties between the Philippines and France in maritime safety and development.

Also, the acquisition of the PCG’s new vessels is included in the proposed Senate Bill 2903, or the PCG Modernization Bill, which aims to reorganize the agency’s structure and modernize its operational capabilities, particularly to address geopolitical challenges in the West Philippine Sea.
