The Aboitiz Foundation has partnered with Fulbright Philippines to launch a scholarship initiative that will empower the next generation of globally competitive Filipino leaders in science, technology, engineering, and mathematics (STEM). The program will allow scholars to pursue advanced studies and research in the United States, with the aim of equipping them with knowledge to drive national development back home.
The collaboration marks a historic milestone as it is the first such partnership between Fulbright Philippines and a private sector foundation. It aligns with the Aboitiz Foundation’s long-standing mission to support inclusive growth and sustainability through education.
“Our collaboration with Fulbright is anchored on a shared vision: to cultivate globally competitive Filipino talent who will drive meaningful change back home,” said Sabin Aboitiz, Chairman of Aboitiz Foundation. “Education is the most powerful tool for progress. By investing in our scholars’ global exposure and expertise, we’re investing in a better Philippines — one that is ready to lead in a dynamic, technology-driven world.”
One success story of this vision is Maria Janela Cantre, a Fulbright alumna who now works with AboitizPower’s strategy team.
“Fulbright gave me the global perspective and training to contribute meaningfully to the energy sector back home. Now, at AboitizPower, I get to support nation-building through reliable and sustainable energy. It’s truly fulfilling to see Fulbright and Aboitiz Foundation come together to create more opportunities for future leaders,” Cantre shared.
For Fulbright Philippines, the partnership expands its capacity to support scholars in key development sectors.
“We at PAEF and the Fulbright Program believe that the private sector plays an important role in national development by providing opportunities for Filipinos to attain graduate degrees, conduct research, and join training programs in the fields of STEM, energy, natural resources, sustainability, and environmental protection. This MOU with Aboitiz Foundation Inc. is historic because it is the first such partnership with a private sector foundation in the country,” said Julio Amador III, Fulbright Philippines Executive Director.
US Ambassador MaryKay Carlson also highlighted the significance of the partnership, saying it strengthens ties between the two countries while supporting industries such as energy and technology.
"For the United States, investing in STEM education strengthens our economic ties with the Philippines and supports U.S. industries operating in the region, especially in energy, technology, and research,” she said.
As the Philippines faces increasing global and technological challenges, the Aboitiz-Fulbright initiative is poised to contribute significantly to the development of future-ready leaders with the expertise and perspective to effect positive change.
