Kuya Bong urges PhilHealth: Expand benefits

Senator Christopher “Bong” Go has renewed his call for the Philippine Health Insurance Corporation (PhilHealth) to focus on providing universal healthcare access for Filipinos.

During a motorcade in Imus City and Bacoor City, Cavite, the senator — who also chairs the Senate Committee on Health — reminded PhilHealth officials that the agency should function as a social health insurer and expand its coverage to alleviate the burden on poor and underserved patients.

“Our health officials should prioritize patients who need help,” Go said. “I reiterate my call to PhilHealth. PhilHealth is for health.” He emphasized that public funds should serve public welfare.

Go reminded PhilHealth that while financial stability is important, the agency’s primary purpose is to provide a financial safety net for those burdened by illness.

“PhilHealth is insurance, not a business,” he said. “PhilHealth should continue to expand its benefits so that they can be utilized by our fellow Filipinos.”

The senator pledged to use his position in the Senate to push for reforms and expanded benefits. “As chairperson of the Senate Committee on Health, I will focus on expanding PhilHealth benefits and returning the people’s money to the people,” Go said.

His renewed appeal is part of an ongoing campaign that began in mid-2024, when he criticized the transfer of PhilHealth excess funds to the National Treasury, warning that the move could jeopardize vital healthcare services. The transfer is also being challenged in the Supreme Court.
