Manila LGU seeks long-term aid to fire survivors

Pat C. Santos

The local government of Manila — through its Department of Social Welfare (MDSW) — is continuing to provide assistance to fire victims in Barangays 118 and 123 in the Tondo District 1.

Aid includes financial assistance, relief goods, hygiene kits, continuous hot meals, and other essential needs.

While the city government sustains its support for the fire victims, it is appealing to the national government for additional aid.

In a statement, the local government said that at least 1,165 families remain affected by the fire and are currently housed in relocation centers in Tondo under the care of the local government unit (LGU) of Manila.

“We are now appealing to Malacañang, the Department of Social Welfare and Development (DSWD), the Department of Human Settlements and Urban Development (DHSUD), and the Department of Public Works and Highways (DPWH) for the infrastructure needs of Manila,” said the local government.

Requests include the construction of two evacuation centers, one in the Port Area and another in Tondo.

“We don’t want to constantly disrupt schools because the negative impact of many days without classes is too severe when classrooms are occupied by evacuees,” said the LGU.
