Local getaways: A travel expert’s picks for the perfect summer

SANTA MARIA, Bulacan — When summer rolls around, many Filipinos look for the perfect place to unwind and recharge. For seasoned travel agent Soledad “Bheng” Gagui, who has been in the travel industry for nearly 14 years, it’s more than just business — it’s a passion rooted in discovering the best local destinations the Philippines has to offer.

Gagui, 45, is the owner of KJS International Travel & Tours, a trusted travel agency she founded back in December 2011. Based in Santa Maria, Bulacan, she has helped countless clients book unforgettable vacations across the archipelago. And when it comes to the most in-demand local flights, she’s quick to name the favorites.

“The top local flights I usually book are El Nido, Palawan, Boracay, Bohol and Cebu,” Gagui shared in an interview with the DAILY TRIBUNE on 26 April.

“They all have amazing beaches that tourists love.”

According to Gagui, summer continues to be the busiest season for domestic tourism, with Boracay remaining a strong favorite among travelers seeking sun, sand and sea.

“Boracay is still the most in-demand local destination during the summer season,” she said.

But for Gagui herself, summer escapades are not just about white sands and crystal-clear waters — they are a much-needed escape from the everyday hustle.

As someone who spends her days assisting clients and navigating the often hectic world of travel bookings, she values destinations that bring peace and rejuvenation.

“El Nido, Palawan and Siargao are my personal favorites,” she revealed.

“Because of their laid-back and relaxing environment, they are the best places to visit during summer.”

Asked why she considers these destinations her top picks, Gagui spoke candidly about the importance of self-care.

“As a travel agent who is always busy dealing with customers and living in a stressful world, I prefer going to places that are good for my mental health,” she explained.

“Visiting beautiful beaches, seeing mountain cliffs, and being surrounded by amazing landscapes are perfect ways for me to recharge from my busy schedule.”

One particular place that holds a special place in her heart is Camiguin Island. Gagui fondly recalled a memorable trip where she found herself mesmerized by the natural beauty of the island.

“One of my favorite experiences was visiting Camiguin Island.”

“I was so fascinated with its stunning white powdery sand bar. It was truly breathtaking.”

As the travel industry continues to rebound and local tourism thrives, Gagui remains committed to helping others discover the hidden gems of the Philippines.

Through her work at KJS International Travel & Tours, she encourages more Filipinos to explore and appreciate the beauty of their own backyard — from the popular shores of Boracay to the serene coastlines of Siargao and beyond.
