Department of Transportation (DOTr) Secretary Vince Dizon expressed confidence Tuesday in the Balingoan Port Expansion Project in Misamis Oriental, calling it crucial for improving human mobility and the efficiency of agricultural transport.
In a radio interview, Dizon said the seaport will serve passengers and agricultural goods in Mindanao, with various routes connecting Misamis Oriental, Camiguin, the Visayas, and Southern Mindanao.
“Maraming mase-serve ang bagong puerto na ito (The new port will serve many),” he affirmed.
He added that the seaport will feature a passenger terminal, in line with President Ferdinand 'Bongbong' Marcos Jr.’s directive to make commuting more convenient and safe for the public.
“Ang PPA nagdo-double time na matapos ang iba't ibang puerto sa buong Pilipinas (The PPA is doubling its efforts to complete various ports across the Philippines),” he said.
In a statement, the DOTr said the port is expected to become the primary gateway to and from Camiguin Island, a top tourist destination known for its landscapes and beaches. The Port of Balingoan plays a key role in boosting tourism, trade, and economic activities in Northern Mindanao.
Meanwhile, Dizon said the agency will inspect airports in Mindanao that are underutilized and in need of rehabilitation.
He emphasized that airports are critical for emergencies and essential for the economy.
